The Internet of Things, or IoT, has become one of the most popular technologies that has changed the way we live. Smart homes, connected cars, industrial automation, healthcare, and many more have become a reality today through IoT devices. The further advancement of IoT will become possible with 6G, the new generation mobile network, revolutionizing our lifestyles and ways of doing business. 5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology, and the following generation is known as 6G. Although 5G networks are still being deployed worldwide, engineers and scientists are already working on the next generation, 6G, which is expected to be commercially available by 2030.
The 6G aims at providing higher data rates, minimal delay, and better network efficiency compared to the 5G technology. For instance, there are projections that 6G could be at least 100 times faster compared to 5G and could potentially hit up to 1Tbps. Besides speed, 6G is anticipated to support valuable and innovative technologies such as AI, XR, and quantum communication, which will significantly transform the IoT milieu.
IoT is now considered an essential aspect of daily life, and various devices can be connected to the internet to exchange information. With smart thermostats, wearable health sensors, connected vehicles, and machine tools, IoT results in automation, continuous monitoring, and data-driven decision-making.
IoT has already had an impact on such fields as agriculture, health care, manufacturing, and automotive vehicles. For instance, smart agriculture systems can detect the state of the soil and the usage of water. At the same time, in the healthcare sector, wearable devices can capture the patient’s vital signs in real-time with the help of sensors and notify the doctors in case of abnormalities.
Which of the 6G aspects is the most promising? Let it be outlined as follows: In the near future, as more and more IoT devices come into play, the need for more bandwidth to accommodate such data volumes is expected to rise. Being a sixth-generation network, 6G is expected to deliver up to 1 Tbps to support the billions of interconnected devices.
It will be of significant importance in applications like autonomous vehicles, where timely decisions can either lead to a safe ride or a crash. In the context of 6G, connected cars are able to share large volumes of data in real time, which helps them make sound decisions on the road.
Latency is known as the time it takes for a device that is sending data to receive a response in return. Latency has already started dropping with 5G, and now 6G hopes to bring this down even further. According to the sources, the latency could be expected to be as low as 1 ms for the 6G technology, making the communication almost instantaneous.
It is also clear that low latency will be more critical for mission-critical applications in which even a small delay time can bring severe consequences. For instance, in the industrial automation environment, machines and robots require instant responses to commands in a bid to eliminate frequent accidents.
6G will be largely expected to support massive IoT, which means that it will be capable of handling billions of devices at the same time. Today, 5G is ready for a millions-per-connection count number. 6 G will go further and make it a tens-per-connection count number where it will not burden the network with too high a number of connections and slowdowns.
It will be particularly advantageous in smart city implementations, which require the deployment of massive IoT devices like traffic lights, surveillance cameras, and environmental sensors to manage city infrastructure. In 6G, such devices can directly interact with one another and help in the management of cities’ resources, thus enhancing the standards of living of its people.
As more and more IoT devices are being developed, the next puzzle is how to make these devices secure. A new trend that has been observed in previous years is cyber-attacks on IoT devices as hackers look to compromise connected devices to get hold of data or sabotage operations.
6G security mechanisms will be used to prevent IoT devices from being vulnerable to cyber threats. For instance, 6G is anticipated to incorporate quantum communication to enable highly secured communication links that hackers cannot penetrate.
It is assumed that AI will become the basis of 6G, AI-driven IoT devices are believed to become increasingly prevalent. Such devices will be programmable to analyze and process data independently without the need for cloud computing technology. This will lead to a decrease in the size of large data centers and increase the speed of decision-making at the edge of the network.
They will also enhance efficiency in the production and delivery of products and services in the manufacturing and logistics sectors. Smart machines controlled by Artificial Intelligence can keep track of performance, diagnose problems, and fix them autonomously.
IoT devices are used, and the demand for power-friendly technologies will only intensify. Some connected Objects derive their power from batteries, and these batteries may run out of control; this, in essence, means that they require charging/replacement periodically. This is especially a challenge when dealing with massive IoT systems where replacement or recharge of batteries for millions of devices cannot be feasible.
6G will overcome this challenge through efficient energy consumption to allow devices to communicate with one another. For instance, 6G networks will enable low-power Internet of Things devices, allowing them to operate for a long duration at a single charge. Moreover, 6G will incorporate the energy to communicate and energy as a communication concept wherein devices will be powering up their sources from surrounding areas, including solar energy, radio frequency signals, and the like.
Even as the world awaits 6G, the future of IoT looks set for more radical changes in ways to imagine. 6G will introduce features such as higher speeds, less latency, more connectivity, superior security, AI incorporation, and reduced energy consumption; IoT will be taken to the following level where smart devices shall become smarter, more responsive, and more effective.
The healthcare sector, transportation sector, and agricultural and manufacturing industries will be some of the most affected by this by having IoT devices that are enhanced by 6G to experience the benefits of automation, real-time data processing, and decision making. With the gradual shifts towards a connected world, 6G has a major role in defining the path for newer generation IoT devices.
